After a series of wars that ended badly, many Americans would prefer to avoid the turmoil of the greater Middle East. But Veteran Journalist Roy Gutman says this is precisely the time to take a close look at what went wrong in past conflicts to ensure it doesn’t recur. From Afghanistan to Iraq, from Syria to Iran, the onus should be on America’s political leadership. Leaders of both U.S. parties rely on the use of force to bring dramatic change but fail to have a plan for political stability the day after. Too often they fail to grasp the politics and the role of regional players in the place being fought over. Journalist Roy Gutman, winner of The Pulitzer Prize for his reporting on the war in Bosnia, has written a book about the war in Afghanistan, reported from Iraq, covered the war in Syria extensively and has long focused on Iran’s role in the greater Middle East.
